(An alternate idea is to start with Ninja Samurai Samurai Samurai and then change Tate's job to Monk at level 36. An advanced possibility is to start with Samurai, Ninja Samurai Samurai, and change Tate's job to Monk at level 36. That way you can change Seig's job to Warrior for the bonus cave so that Excalibur can be equipped).
TIPS FOR THE BOSSES:
The bosses (the Dragons, Incubus, and the bonus cave boss) all use strong magic breath hit-all-members attacks. It's vital that your sage/monk keeps Blessing Barrier up, and it's a good idea to have Curtain in effect.
One strategy idea for these battles is to have your three fighters use Defend the first two rounds awhile the Sage/Monk uses Blessing and then Curtain.
If the Sage/Monk has a free round, High Tension will strengthen a fighter's attack.
If a fighter is low on HP, you might want that one to use Defend until the Sage can heal.
It's also a good idea to have a Miracle Leaf on hand for each of your fighters so that they can revive the Sage/Monk if needed. The Sage should carry an Elixir or two to restore MP when necessary.

Thanks Tom for all your tips. Just for the record I had a party of Warrior, Ninja, Monk, Magician and I only remember twice where I spent time leveling up before I could progress in the game. I used that party the whole way through.

I'm really hoping that someone actually follows through in making a proper guide for this game. As fun as this series is, the message board setup can be pretty tedious sometimes. Thanks though for everyone who has posted help here.

But why do you need a walkthrough? It's not like the game is hard to figure out. A few items might be hard to find, but then a quick search (too easy in my opinion) lets you find anything you need. It makes the game too easy. That being said, I made a speadsheet keeping track of some stat stuff, like what weapons/armor is sold where, magic learned, stuff like that. But isn't that normal anytime you play an RPG? :)

@ Calyx
Nearly finished with my guide, will be posting the link sometime this week.
That said, I do prefer to figure things out myself when I play a RPG :-)

Btw, does anyone know where the black gem is found? I picked it up somewhere in my 2nd play through but forgot to write it down :-( I don't want my guide to be incomplete.

I didn't write it down either, sorry.

The Black Gem is in the Hidden Cave (Lost Woods) south of Aka Village.

I'm going to be making a simple guide for GameFaqs and similar sites. It will list the unique items and where/how to get them. It won't be a detailed walkthrough like Alex is planning. It will be aimed at those who can't find a certain item.

Thanks for the black gem location Tom.
Here is the link for any that are interested:

A few things are incomplete at the moment, but it is mostly finished and will at the least get you to Incubus without missing any key items or special equipment.
