It's also known as the "wall follower" method, and it works in any "perfect" maze (a maze with no loops). All towers and caves that I know of in the Gailardia 1-3 series are perfect mazes.
The party chooses one hand or the other, puts that hand on the wall, and follows the wall through the maze. Remember that the party's perspective won't be the same as yours (i.e. when they're facing you and heading south, their left is your right).
This will also work with multiple levels.

Where do you find the crystal? I have all 3 horns but can't find the crystal anywhere so can't do through the cave in Romario.

I assume you've made it to Howard Castle and fetched the Compass from the nearby cave.
If you earlier tried to go through the mountain pass east of Mizuri, you would have failed. The sage at the nearby shrine spoke of people getting lost in the desert and how it would be nice to have a device that let people know which direction they were traveling in.
Now that you have the Compass, you should teleport back to Mizuri and try going through the pass again. This will let you continue on in the game.

Found the crystal. Missed something in the tower southwest of Elisa.

Where might one find the Green Horn?

Besides the Artic Crystal, there are two nice items in side-by-side chests in the tower south of Elisa. They're on a totally different path than the one that leads you to the Rex.
The Green Horn is dropped by the Green Rex. The Rex lives in the tower southeast of Mizuri.

Actually, they're not on a totally different path (I was thinking of another place). But you do have to go past the holes (and when you take the hole, take the NW one) to get to the chests. You'll find the Ruby Helm and Freshwater Pearl.
The South Sea Pearl is another tricky one. It's in the cave leading to Despair, and you have to go past the stairs leading to the exit to find it.

If I had any tips for people playing it would be these:
If you don't want to buy so-so weapons and armor and get to the better stuff sooner then once you find the ship, you need to talk to the man to get the letter. Get the bomb. Get the cell key. Get the compass. And then head to Elisa. Everything else can be filled in at any time.
Always save your money. Even when you don't think you have anything else to buy, there's always more to buy. I beat the final boss and found out I needed $345,000 more to buy the last few things before Quetzcoatal.
Make a note of where there are holes you "can't" fall into. They will be important at the end of the game.

On my third play-through of the game, I kept leveling/grinding to a minimum.
That said, you'll still do well to make your way to Mizuri, then stick around Port Town until you've made enough to buy the Magic armor for your party (It's sold in Mizuri, which is why you need to walk there once). You'll be about level 20 or 21 when you're done, and you'll have good enough equipment and a high enough level to go anywhere that the game will let you go to. If you fight the battles that happen as you go, you should be able to explore the rest of the game and level naturally without needing to stay in one place again. If you want a few more levels, the Silver Bells hang around the Romario Shrine frequently at level 30 and higher if you use Amor.

I pressed the button in the cave at the end of the lake (with the black gem) in the middle of the western continent and it told me of a sound far away. Where is that sound?
Also I got the secret letter but do I need the cell key before going to morys? There looks to be a portion of land on the SE tip of the western continent I still can't access too
